The Astronomy Club of Bangabasi College under the aegis of The Department of Physics was
initiated in the Academic Session of 2024-25, after an official nod from the Governing Body in
June 2024.
Primarily created for the enthusiasm and interest of students of the College only, the aim was to
prepare them for the International Astronomy & Astrophysics Competition (IAAC) held every
year. IAAC has agreed to collaborate with the Club in all respects and allowed to use its logo.

The Introductory Course on Basic Astronomy & Astrophysics was formulated with the whole
hearted cooperation extended by Dr. Gourav Banerjee, Post Doctoral Fellow, Vainu Bappu
Observatory, Indian Institute of Astrophysics. With the online lectures being uploaded regularly
in the dedicated YouTube Channel of the Physics Department, a huge demand to join the club
arose from U.G and P.G students from all over West Bengal and elsewhere. The present number
of group members is 180+.
Classes are held regularly every week, with bimonthly special lectures by experts. There are
plans to conduct OFFLINE hands on sessions with Telescopes and Sky Watching. Also in the
line are participation in Citizen Science Astronomy Projects and Research Internships for
motivated students.
